How to Configure Windows 95 Network Settings in VirtualBox

You may get an error when you try to access the Internet after installing Windows 95 with the Oracle VM VirtualBox virtualization program.

If you encounter with the “An unexpected error has occurred. Restart Explorer browser, and then try again.” error when attempting to access the Internet on a Win 95 virtual machine running on VirtualBox, the connection settings of the VM probably have not been made.

One of the main reasons why a computer can not access the Internet is that it can not obtain an IP address from a DHCP server. With this being the main problem, the computer’s LAN (Local Area Network) settings may not have been set.

However, to connect to the Internet on a Windows 95 Shareit pc bagas31. VM in VBox, the TCP/IP protocol must be installed. If the TCP/IP protocol is not installed in the Win 95 VM, you will not be able to access the Internet.

How to Fix Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 Internet Connection

For Internet connection of Win 95 running on VirtualBox on PC, follow the steps below in order.

Step 1

Open the Oracle VM VBox software and run the Win 95 virtual machine and run Explorer. If you get an error like the one below when you open Explorer, you need to configure the Internet connection settings.

Click the OK button to close the warning window.

Step 2

To install the TCP/IP components on the Win 95 VM, follow the path to Start/Settings/Control Panel and open the Control Panel.

Step 3

Double-click on Network in the Control Panelwindow.

Click the Add button to add the TCP/IP protocol in the Networkwindow.

Step 5

In the Network Component Typewindow, click Protocol first. On the Network Protocolscreen, select TCP/IP and click the OK button.

You can see that TCP/IP has been added to the Networkscreen. Click the OK button to save the settings.

Step 7

The following warning prompts you to add your CD-ROM for TCP/IP setup. Click the OK button to continue.

Step 8

In our previous Win 95 installation, we copied the operating system installation files to the C: drive. Specify where the C:WIN95 folder is located and click on the OK button to start the TCP/IP protocol setup.

Step 9

Wait while the TCP/IP component installs for Win 95 Internet connection…

Step 10

After the TCP/IP protocol setup, restart the VM.

After restarting the VM, open Internet Explorer and verify that the settings work by viewing any of the websites.

As you can see below, we have successfully connected the Win 95 VM to the Internet in VBox!

Hello, I am new to the site, and am not terribly computer savey - so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have recently switched from very slow dial up to TWC roadrunner cable internet. Worked fine on my XP notebook. Problem started when I tried to connect my Windows 98SE PC via a Linksys router and Belkin wireless card installed on PC. PC was able to find the router, but not the internet.

Two routers and two wireless cards later, I finally gave up and had the cable installed upstairs where the PC is. Now, I still cannot connect to the internet on the PC, using a direct ethernet connection from the modem (no router). However, when I plug directly into the notebook, it still works just fine.

TWC (Cable Co.) has walked me through ping tests. I can ping via IP address, but not by URL address. They have advised that there is something in my computer blocking connection. I have uninstalled all virus protection as best I know how. They referred me to Microsoft, who told me they no longer supoort Windows 98.

Can this problem be fixed?

if that doesn't work,

make sure you have your WINDOWS 98 INSTALL DISK.

open add/remove programs and find the 'windows setup' files, uncheck 'Communication' box and click ok.
reboot,
open add/remove programs, stc. and recheck the 'communication' box.
Reboot.
